Alexa Speaking Without Being Asked

Last night at midnight Alexa scared me silly. I had the volume up from playing music earlier, and she shouts out "I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that" without being prompted. Why is this? The only way to stop it is to turn it off, what is the point of having it?

  • When Echo's Mics are on it is possible that some other spoken word or sound matches the wake work "Alexa". I have had a few occurrences of "Alex" and "Alexander" waking Echo.

The only way to stop it is to turn it off

You may try turning off its Mic, when you do not wish Alexa to listen. but, functions such as Alarm will still work.

  • Okay this may be quite much, but I am trying to use Google Home to cast a video from my laptop (which I don't mind using for this sole purpose since it's old and unneeded) to my Smart LG TV which has a Chromecast. Now I could use a Python script to search for whatever I asked google home to play on my laptop, but how exactly can I let Google Home run the script with my variables being the video file name. Is there any other solution I can use without having to buy something else? (Although I would not mind buying something to help if it were cheap)

  • of the blind motor. I have another switch, for manual control, with 2 buttons, up and down, and when you click one, the other disconnects automatically, so you can't press both at the same time. Any ideas of how to join the 2 circuits, without being able to power up the 2 Phases of the Motor, and being able to control anytime, from the manual switch, or the wireless switch. ...I have a Smart Switch (Sonoff Dual WiFi Wireless Smart Switch), and I control it through a Google Home. It works as a contact, like if it was a switch: I want to control an electric blind

  • I was recently asked if Alexa can ever speak without prompting, so I thought it'd be helpful to ask here to make sure I'm right; as far as I know, Alexa will never, ever speak without the wake word, and the only unprompted sound it will make is the alarm sound. This TechCrunch article seems to agree that there isn't any way to make Alexa speak unprompted, but it doesn't mention Alexa skills... if the doorbell is ringing, or some way of indicating an event has happened. Can Alexa speak without first being prompted by either the wake word, tap-to-talk or push-to-talk (depending on the device)? I'm

  • I want to have custom wake-word for Alexa so I want to interface this Amazon Echo with an external device. I am wondering if it is possible to create a proxy device that would wake up Alexa if I give... environment. Now, when I want to use Alexa, instead of waking it up directly I would use my proxy, that would somehow enable Alexa's microphone and switch Alexa into Listening state. When Alexa goes back to Idle the proxy should automatically switch it to Microphone Off state. What I need in general are: The proxy should know Alexa's current state. Won't be the best solution but I may can
